Beyer to host financial guidance event for federal workers amid agency layoffs

Rep. Don Beyer will host a financial guidance workshop for current and former federal workers on Sept. 20, as his Northern Virginia district grapples with reported mass layoffs across federal agencies under the Trump administration.

The free event, scheduled from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Paragon Theaters on Founders Avenue in Falls Church, is part of Beyer’s “Rising to Meet the Challenge” series aimed at supporting constituents affected by current federal policies.

Beyer, whose district includes one of the highest concentrations of federal employees in the country, announced the workshop Thursday in partnership with Falls Church Mayor Letty Hardi and wellfed, an organization of former federal employees that provides career support for current and former federal workers and contractors. The congressman invited the public to attend via video posted on YouTube.

The event will feature a Financial Triage Workshop led by experts who will share budgeting strategies, expense tracking techniques, and career planning guidance. Attendees will also have access to community and wellness resources, with refreshments and lunch provided.

“We have seen the news of mass firings at different federal agencies,” Beyer wrote in an open letter published earlier this week. “At the Departments of Agriculture, Education, State, Health and Human Services, at OPM, FDA, CDC, NIH, and NASA. This is deeply tragic and upsetting.”

The congressman said the workshop recognizes that financial resilience requires both practical guidance and community support during uncertain times.

“Many of us are seeing hard times, but we must not lose hope or the determination to support each other and fight for a better country,” Beyer wrote. “America was founded on optimism and creativity, and we cannot lose those valuable traits even in the toughest times that call for continued patriotism and endurance.”

The event will include time for questions and answers, as well as space for networking and mental health support. Organizers emphasized that resilience is built through both financial planning and community connection.

Current and former federal employees at every stage of their careers are invited to attend the workshop, which carries no cost to participants. The event is expected to fill quickly, and registration is available at https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfkQccMWowJUbeccPJY0lxjTRCUUBDY2coc8jTuz373u1fLxA/viewform.
