Alexandria City High School to host 25th anniversary celebration of ‘Remember the Titans’

Alexandria City Public Schools will commemorate the 25th anniversary of the beloved football film “Remember the Titans” with a special celebration at Alexandria City High School on Sept. 19.

The ticketed evening event promises “special guests, fun surprises, and a whole lot of Titan pride,” according to a school district announcement. Activities will include a student pep rally, Titan tailgate, and a tribute to the 1971 Titans team that inspired the Disney film.

“Remember the Titans,” released in 2000, told the story of T.C. Williams High School’s newly integrated football team in 1971 Alexandria. The film starred Denzel Washington as Coach Herman Boone, who led the team through racial tensions to an undefeated season and state championship.

The movie was based on the real experiences of the 1971 T.C. Williams Titans, now part of Alexandria City High School following the school’s 2021 renaming. The original T.C. Williams High School was renamed after community concerns about the school’s namesake, who was a segregationist.

Alexandria City Public Schools has not yet released ticket information or additional details about the September celebration. The district said more information will be shared in the coming weeks.
