The National Weather Service has issued a flood watch for Alexandria and surrounding Northern Virginia communities, warning of potential flash flooding from heavy rainfall expected Thursday afternoon through late evening.
The watch, which remains in effect from Thursday afternoon through late Thursday night, covers Arlington, Falls Church, Alexandria, Fairfax and Prince William counties, along with the District of Columbia and portions of Maryland.
“Flash flooding caused by excessive rainfall continues to be possible,” according to the weather service’s Baltimore/Washington office.
Forecasters predict numerous showers and thunderstorms will develop Thursday afternoon, with the heaviest rainfall most likely between 3 p.m. and 8 p.m. Thunderstorms may produce rainfall rates of 1 to 2 inches within 30 minutes.
Widespread rainfall amounts of 1 to 2 inches are expected across the region. However, some areas could experience multiple rounds of thunderstorms, potentially receiving 4 to 6 inches of rain.
The weather service warned that excessive runoff may cause flooding in rivers, creeks, streams and other low-lying areas. Urban areas with poor drainage are particularly vulnerable to street flooding.
Officials also noted the possibility of severe thunderstorms Thursday afternoon and evening, with damaging wind gusts being the primary threat.
Residents are advised to monitor weather forecasts and be prepared to seek higher ground immediately if flash flood warnings are issued. The weather service recommends having a plan in place before the storms arrive.
No hazardous weather is expected for the remainder of the week following Thursday’s storm system.
