National Weather Service issues Heat Advisory for Alexandria Friday

The National Weather Service issued a heat advisory for Alexandria and the greater Washington region Thursday, warning residents to prepare for dangerous heat index values that could reach 109 degrees Friday.

The advisory takes effect at 11 a.m. Friday and remains in place until 8 p.m., covering portions of the District of Columbia, central and northern Maryland, and northern Virginia.

“Hot temperatures and high humidity may cause heat illnesses,” the weather service warned in its 1:23 a.m. advisory.

Officials urged residents to take precautionary measures, including drinking plenty of fluids, staying in air-conditioned spaces, and avoiding prolonged sun exposure. The advisory specifically recommends checking on relatives and neighbors during the heat event.

For those who must spend time outdoors, the weather service advises wearing lightweight, loose-fitting clothing and limiting strenuous activities to early morning or evening hours when temperatures are cooler.

The advisory also warns residents to recognize symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke, both potentially serious conditions that can develop when the body cannot adequately cool itself in extreme heat.

Friday’s expected heat index of up to 109 degrees represents the combination of air temperature and humidity, indicating how hot conditions actually feel to the human body. Heat index values above 105 degrees pose significant health risks, particularly for vulnerable populations, including young children, adults over 65, and those with chronic medical conditions.

The heat advisory affects Arlington, Falls Church, and Alexandria, along with Fairfax County and other jurisdictions throughout the region.
