A man was found dead at a Duke Street bus stop early Saturday morning (July 19), prompting a temporary closure of westbound lanes as police investigated the incident.
Alexandria Police reported that an adult male was discovered unresponsive at the bus stop at Duke Street and Sweeley Street around 6:15 a.m. The discovery was made by an off-duty Alexandria firefighter who was driving to work when he noticed the man slumped over at the transit stop.
“When he stopped to check on him, he realized he was deceased,” Alexandria Police stated in a social media update. “Appears he had been deceased for several hours and there is no sign of foul play or evidence of drug paraphernalia.”
The incident initially caused significant traffic disruption, with westbound lanes of Duke Street closed at Sweeley Street beginning at 7:28 a.m. as authorities conducted their death investigation. The roadway was reopened by approximately 9:20 a.m.
Police indicated that the deceased man had a history of public intoxication arrests in Fairfax County, though no additional details about his identity have been released.
The Alexandria Police Department emphasized that there is no ongoing threat to public safety related to this incident. The investigation remains ongoing, though preliminary findings suggest the death was not the result of criminal activity.
This is a developing story.
