A century-old Sears kit house in Del Ray (211 E. Oxford Ave.), now converted into a music studio, hosted a community celebration on Saturday (June 14), featuring both professional artists and emerging young musicians.
The Crab Shack Live Centennial celebrated the 100th anniversary of the building known as “The Shack.” The event showcased performances by students and established artists who have recorded at the studio.
Jack Kilby, owner of Crab Shack Music, said before the event, “We’re putting on an event that really shows off the amazing talent of our students and recording artists, and all the good things this house brings to our community.”
The celebration began with a Student Revue in the afternoon, featuring approximately 20 young musicians between the ages of 7 and 17. In the evening, the event shifted to an Artist Showcase hosted by vocalist and instrumentalist Dante’ Pope.
Headlining acts included Washington D.C.-based salsa jazz quintet Elijah Jamal Balbed & Fiesta Mojo and country rock group Burt the Dirt, both of whom have recorded albums at the Shack.
Local businesses contributed sponsorships and donations to cover costs. Jamie Branch’s Backyard Provisions provided food and drinks.
Kilby added, “This night is all about the community coming together to celebrate the arts happening right here in their neighborhood, especially in a place they might otherwise see as just an old, run-down building.”
