Weather Alert: Coastal Flood Advisory issued for Alexandria

A Coastal Flood Advisory is in effect for Alexandria from 2 p.m. Wednesday (May 21) to 6 a.m. Thursday (May 22). Tides are expected to rise up to two and a half feet above normal levels.

The National Weather Service in Baltimore/Washington has issued the advisory, warning that low-lying areas could see water up to one foot above ground level.

If you’re in Alexandria, be ready for water to come close to the curb near King Street and Strand Street during high tide.

The advisory points out that water is likely to creep up along parts of the seawall, putting coastal areas at risk.

High tide in Alexandria is set for 3:41 p.m. Wednesday and 4:16 a.m. Thursday. These times line up with when flooding risk is highest.

This advisory also covers Washington, D.C., and Arlington County.

...COASTAL FLOOD ADVISORY IN EFFECT FROM 2 PM THIS AFTERNOON TO
6 AM EDT THURSDAY...

* WHAT...Up to one foot of inundation above ground level
  expected in low lying areas due to tidal flooding.

* WHERE...Shoreline in the District of Columbia, Arlington
  County, and the City of Alexandria.

* WHEN...From 2 PM this afternoon to 6 AM EDT Thursday,
  especially around the time of high tide.

* IMPACTS...Shoreline inundation is expected along portions of
  the seawall adjacent to Ohio Drive and the Hains Point Loop Road
  and near the Tidal Basin. Water is expected to approach the
  curb near the intersection of King Street and Strand Street in
  Alexandria.

* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...Tides two to two and a half feet above
  normal. The next high tide at Washington Channel is at 3:23 PM
  and 3:58 AM. The next high tide at Alexandria is at 3:41 PM and
  4:16 AM.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

If travel is required, allow extra time as some roads may be
closed. Do not drive around barricades or through water of
unknown depth. Take the necessary actions to protect flood-prone
property.
