ACPS superintendent, parent advocate, and two school PTAs recognized for outstanding advocacy and engagement

Alexandria City Public Schools (ACPS) is celebrating recent recognition from the Virginia Parent Teacher Association (Virginia PTA). Several community members and organizations received Impact Awards for their exceptional advocacy and engagement work.

The Virginia PTA has honored ACPS Superintendent Dr. Melanie Kay-Wyatt, parent and Alexandria Parent Teacher Association Council (PTAC) Vice President of Advocacy Maureen McNulty, and two school PTAs for their contributions to student success and family involvement.

Dr. Kay-Wyatt has been named a 2024-25 Power Partner of the Year. This award recognizes her efforts in strengthening parent-school relationships and creating an inclusive environment for all students and families.

“I am deeply honored to receive this award—it is a reflection of the incredible work happening across our school division to strengthen family engagement,” said Kay-Wyatt. “We know that when families and schools partner meaningfully, students are more connected and successful. I’m especially proud of our school community and the individual PTAs that have been recognized this year. Their dedication, advocacy, and unwavering support for students, teachers and families are what make our division so special. This award belongs to all of us and I am proud to be a part of a division where collaboration is valued and seen as a key to student success.”

Maureen McNulty has received the Virginia PTA Child Advocate of the Year award. She’s been recognized for her work in educating the community about the budget process and breaking down cultural barriers.

Two school PTAs have also been acknowledged with Impactful PTAs awards for their innovative programs and community engagement initiatives. The George Mason Elementary School PTA transformed their traditional pasta fundraiser into an international night, celebrating the school’s diverse community. Meanwhile, the Lyles-Crouch Traditional Academy PTA organized a Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day, promoting unity and historical awareness among students.

“I am so proud of all the family engagement work that has been done by our PTA units this year, including George Mason Elementary School PTA and the Lyles Crouch Traditional Academy PTA, and it is exciting that VA PTA is recognizing everyone’s efforts,” said Alexandria PTAC President Catie Brownback. “We are lucky to have a partner in Dr. Kay-Wyatt and appreciate all the ways she has connected with and worked with us this year. Maureen has been a tireless advocate for ACPS for years and we are thrilled to have her work publicly recognized.”
