Alexandria and nearby areas are under a Flood Watch from Tuesday morning through late Tuesday night, according to the National Weather Service. The alert, issued Monday afternoon, covers parts of western Maryland, Virginia, and West Virginia.
Heavy rain could lead to flooding in creeks, streams, and low-lying areas. Some roads might become impassable as water levels rise.
“Flooding may occur in flood-prone locations due to excessive runoff,” the National Weather Service says.
A long stretch of moderate to heavy rain, with some thunderstorms mixed in, is expected to start late Monday night and continue through Tuesday night. Most areas will likely see 2 to 4 inches of rain, with higher amounts possible near the Blue Ridge Mountains and Alleghenies.
Residents should keep an eye on weather updates and be ready for potential Flood Warnings. If you live in an area that often floods, have a plan ready just in case.
The National Weather Service recommends checking www.weather.gov/safety/flood for flood safety tips and how to prepare.
The Flood Watch includes Alexandria, Arlington, Falls Church, Fairfax, and parts of Prince William County.
