Agenda Alexandria to examine local election history and future during May program

Agenda Alexandria is gearing up for its May program, which will examine Alexandria’s elections past, present, and future.

The event, which will be held at 7 p.m. on May 19 at Virginia Theological Seminary, will be moderated by Michael Pope and feature a panel of experts, including Liz White, executive director of UpVote, Jeff Schapiro, longtime columnist with the Richmond Times-Dispatch, and Scott Vierick, historian from the Alexandria Historical Society.

From ranked-choice voting to liquor at the polls, the history of voting in Alexandria is democracy in action or sometimes inaction. Agenda Alexandria will examine the past, present and future of how we vote and why with an all-star panel of experts.

Led by Moderator Michael Pope, we’ll examine the history of the Common Council and the Board of Alderman. We’ll take a look at some of the most significant elections in Virginia and voting trends. And we’ll even explain how ranked-choice voting would split a single transferable vote six ways in City Council election.

This event wraps up Agenda Alexandria’s 2024-2025 season of panel discussions. During the program, Agenda Alexandria members will vote on new Board members and officers, including positions like Chair, Vice Chair, Treasurer, and Secretary.
