Alexandria is rolling out a new volunteer program called the Green Team to help keep neighborhoods tidy and protect local waterways.Launched as part of Earth Month celebrations, this initiative lets individual volunteers join the city’s year-round litter cleanup efforts.
The Department of Transportation & Environmental Services’ Resource Recovery and Stormwater Management Divisions spearhead the Green Team Individual Litter Cleanup Program.
This program aims to boost existing litter removal efforts, working alongside the City’s Clean Team, the Department of Recreation, Parks, and Cultural Activities (RPCA) PARKnership Program, and the Adopt-a-Block Program.
It’s important to note that trash can easily make its way through storm sewers into local waterways.
The Green Team program recognizes the hard work of current volunteers and helps newcomers join the citywide effort to protect the Potomac River and Chesapeake Bay.
Want to get involved? Head to the Green Team website to sign up and receive a cleanup kit. You’ll get a trash grabber, safety vest, gloves, trash bags, first aid kit, and a satchel for carrying litter.
The city is handing out kits on a first-come, first-served basis, with a limit of one per household.
