Alexandria is set to host two separate gatherings demanding action today at 1 p.m. Supporters will rally outside the U.S. District Court during an immigration hearing for Dr. Badar Khan Suri, a Georgetown professor detained by ICE whose supporters allege his arrest is tied to pro-Palestine activism. Simultaneously, Uber and Lyft drivers will convene at the New Virginia Majority office as part of an international May Day strike, calling for fair pay, transparency, and better working conditions from the rideshare companies.

More info on each gathering.

At the United States District Court (401 Courthouse Square) today at 1 p.m., there will be a rally coinciding with the immigration hearing of Dr. Badar Khan Suri, a Georgetown professor and Arlington resident, who was detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) on March 17th. Supporters allege his detention, which followed the State Department’s revocation of his J-1 visa two days prior, is linked to his involvement in the pro-Palestine movement and represents a broader crackdown on free speech by the Trump administration. Since his initial apprehension, Dr. Khan Suri, who is married to a US citizen, was moved from Virginia to ICE facilities in Louisiana and then Texas. Today’s hearing aims to determine if he can be returned to Virginia ahead of his trial and where that trial will ultimately be held, while organizers and participants at the rally are demanding his release and denouncing ICE’s actions within the community.

Uber and Lyft drivers affiliated with the DMV Drivers Alliance and the Asian American Pacific Islander Civic Engagement (ACE) Collaborative of New Virginia Majority are set to gather at the New Virginia Majority office (3801 Mt Vernon Ave). This local event is part of a broader international call for drivers and app users to strike and boycott Uber and Lyft for the day. Participating drivers are advocating for significant changes in their working conditions, demanding transparency regarding fares, fees, and account deactivations; a fair process for challenging deactivations rather than abrupt app-based terminations; the right to organize and bargain collectively; access to standard labor protections; and measures to ensure fair income and safety without excessive driving hours. Drivers involved express concerns about diminishing earnings despite increased work hours and echo the global May Day tradition of demanding better pay and working conditions.
