200 Marathons, One Goal: Transforming Alexandria classrooms

Alexandria resident Brooke Sydnor Curran, founder and CEO of Alexandria-based nonprofit Move2Learn, just completed her 200th marathon.

Curran crossed the finish line at the Coastal Delaware Running Festival in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, on Sunday (April 13), adding another impressive feat to her running resume. She’s now completed marathons in all 50 states, tackled all six World Marathon Majors, and raced on every continent.

Move2Learn, Curran’s organization, provides movement-based programs free of charge to about a third of Alexandria’s public school students each day.

“Running changed my life—it helped me focus, manage stress, and build resilience,” said Curran. “I started wondering: Why can’t we do the same for students? The research is clear. For students to learn more, they need to be in their seats less.”

The nonprofit aims to boost student focus, engagement, and overall well-being by applying movement science. By weaving physical activity into the school day, Move2Learn gives teachers and schools tools to improve student performance and attendance.

Curran works full-time at Move2Learn without taking a salary and covers all her marathon-related expenses out of pocket.

In 2018, Curran faced a major health scare when she survived a brain aneurysm and underwent emergency surgery. Remarkably, she was back on her feet running the Marine Corps Marathon just five months later.
