The Alexandria Times reported that Alexandria City Public Schools Superintendent Melanie Kay-Wyatt may have been a driving force to eliminate the K-8 model in a vote last year.

The Times interviewed former School Board members Jacinta Greene and Abdel Elnoubi, both now members of the City Council, who said that Kay-Wyatt pushed for the decision to be made before a new School Board could be sworn in.

In earlier public outreach about what to do about Jefferson-Houston and Patrick Henry, both PreK-8 and K-8 schools, there was no indication ACPS was approaching a final decision and surveys about the change showed eliminating the K-8 model was unpopular among the school communities. The vote in December to turn Patrick Henry into an elementary school and Jefferson-Houston into a middle school shocked the community and provoked criticism from Alexandria’s Planning Commission.

A legal complaint was filed against the School Board after the vote by a parent and the Alexandria Times said ACPS did not respond to Greene and Elnoubi’s comments pending legal action.
