Patch reported that new Old Town restaurant Cooper Mill is now open near Alexandria’s Waterfront.

The new restaurant at 10 Duke Street is inside a rebuilt former mill that also served as a mess hall for soldiers during the Civil War. Now, the restaurant serves pizza, salads, ‘tavern bites’ and more.

In addition to the restaurant space, the building will have a market with grab-and-go items, tavern, and event area.

“Named after the former mill on the site, the project aims to preserve the historic charm of the building, which served as a Civil War commissary for the Union Army,” the website said. “The two-story, 6,400 sq. ft. warehouse will feature a market offering breakfast foods, sandwiches, and beverages, a casual tavern on the first floor, and a private event space on the second floor with capacity for up to 120 people.”

The restaurant is currently open from 11 a.m.-10 p.m. seven days a week.

The project was renovated by Murray Bonitt of Bonitt Builders who is also aiming to bring a new taco restaurant to the Big Wheel Bikes space just down the road at 2 Prince Street.
