One dead after fire under overpass near Holmes Run Park

One person is dead after a fire at a homeless encampment near Holmes Run Park in Alexandria’s West End.

The Alexandria Fire Department discovered the fire under an overpass in the 4600 block of Duke Street, near the entrance to Holmes Run Park and the Shoppes at Foxchase. The Friday night fire was reported at around 10:45 p.m. by a resident in a nearby apartment building, according to AFD dispatches.

One person was found dead by first responders in a 40-foot-by20-foot homeless encampment under the overpass, according to dispatch.

Temperatures were freezing in Alexandria on Friday night.

No other details on the victim were released.

The incident temporarily shut down westbound traffic along Duke Street. At around midnight, police reported on social media that they were conducting a death investigation in the area and that there was no threat to the public.

The incident occurred near to where a woman was assaulted in October.
