Carpenter’s Shelter opens 64-bed winter facility for homeless in Alexandria

Carpenter’s Shelter recently expanded operations with the opening of the renovated 64-bed Alexandria Community Shelter on Wednesday (Dec. 11).

Carpenter’s Shelter took over the former Department of Community and Human Services space at at 2355-B Mill Road a year ago. The made over space is operating as a winter shelter.

“Whether you have rolled up your sleeves, whether you have written checks, whether you have partnered with the City of Alexandria or you have partnered with Beyond the Blueprint, we are so very grateful,” said Carpenter’s Shelter Executive Director Shannon Steene.

The new shelter helps homeless people have a warm, safe place to sleep at night.

“The Winter Shelter, operated by Carpenter’s Shelter, is open nightly from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. regardless of weather from November 1 through April 15,” according to Carpenter’s Shelter.

LeBaron Frost lives at the shelter, and said that the staff at the facility are supportive.

“I can get a hug when I need a hug,” Frost said. “I can get a cup of hot tea when I need a cup of hot tea. Thank you all. Whatever role you’ve played in supporting us, I really do thank you.”
