What is the most dangerous street in Alexandria?

Traffic safety advocacy group Northern Virginia Families for Safe Streets (NoVA FSS) compiled crash data from 2021 to 2024 and put together a ranking of the city’s most dangerous corridors with one standing out in particular.

The ranking looks not at the number of crashes, but the number of total casualties — from visible and non-visible injuries to severe and fatal crashes — reported by the Virginia Department of Transportation.

Duke Street, a busy arterial road, was number one with nearly double the number of casualties of the next closest street.

From January 2021 to July 2024 there were 30 crashes with injuries on Duke Street. The next closest was Mount Vernon Avenue, with 16 crashes with injuries, followed by W. Glebe Road with 12 crashes.

Duke Street also saw the most severe and fatal injuries.

For the past few years, the City of Alexandria has been working through a plan called Duke Street In Motion that aims to shift Duke Street’s design to have a bigger focus on transit, cyclist and pedestrian safety with hopes to install a bus rapid transit system on the corridor.
