Virginia State Police have identified the motorcyclist who died after a crash on Interstate 495 in Alexandria on Saturday afternoon as 20-year-old Michael A. Dart of Washington, D.C.

The crash occurred just before 2 p.m. in the local lanes of I-495 westbound near the Telegraph Road exit at mile marker 177, according to VSP.

Dart was driving a 2012 Yamaha YZF-R1 when he struck the driver-side rear door of a Toyota 4Runner, according to VSP.

“The motorcycle then bounced off the 4Runner, and struck the rear of  a third vehicle, which did not remain on scene,” VSP said in a release. “After hitting the third vehicle, the motorcyclist and motorcycle were thrown onto the left shoulder, striking the jersey wall.”

Dart, who was wearing a helmet, was unresponsive at the scene, according to dispatch. He later died at an area hospital.

The driver of the 4Runner was not injured, and the unidentified third car did not remain at the scene, according to VSP.

“The make and model of the third vehicle is unknown at this time,” VSP said. “The crash remains under investigation.”

Dart is the second motorcyclist to die in a crash in Alexandria this year. Alexandria has a goal of eliminating fatal crashes, and there were zero fatal crashes in 2023 in the city.
