Olympic champ Noah Lyles welcomed back home in Alexandria

Olympic champion Noah Lyles received a hero’s welcome back home in Alexandria today.

The 27-year-old was greeted by city and school leaders, as well as hundreds of cheering fans at his alma mater, Alexandria City High School.

“We are here to celebrate Alexandria excellence,” Mayor Justin Wilson said, presenting Lyles with a proclamation. “We are so proud of what you have used your platform to do.”

Lyles, a 2016 ACHS graduate, first sat atop a convertible in a rally celebration at Chinquapin Park, and later received commendations from the Virginia legislature and U.S. Rep. Don Beyer (D-8) in the Alexandria City High School gymnasium.

“I thank you for this wonderful moment. You know, a lot of people become Olympians, and you know, I’m thankful that I have a city that supports me and comes out and gives thanks that I was even from here. Not everybody has that opportunity.”

Lyles won the gold medal in the 100 meters in a photo-finish and bronze in the 200m at the Paris Olympics. He also won the bronze in the 200m in the 2021 Tokyo Olympics, after which he received the key to the city.

Lyles told reporters that he’s considering acting after eventually wrapping up his running career.

“As it comes to me, I’ll decide,” Lyles said, adding that another career will likely follow his athletics. “You never know. I’m open to everything.”
