Out of the ongoing back and forth around the closure of Judy Lowe park has spun a second front in Del Ray’s passive aggressive political battles: the sign wars.

Washingtonian reported that Alexandria’s Department of Planning and Zoning has been called in to address signs that exceed sign limits in the neighborhood. Signs must be four square feet or less and are prohibited — though writer Andrew Beaujon notes the statue allows for ten feet of total temporary signage — and signs cannot be posted in the medians.

The city’s Land Use Services Division Chief Tony LaColla told Washingtonian that the organization does not seek out sign ordinance violators, but does respond to complaints. Those found in violation have ten days to remove the sign or face a $200 fine, regardless of the content of the sign.

Political signs have been popping up all over Del Ray. Most of them have been in favor of Harris/Walz or against Trump/Vance, though at least one Trump/Vance sign was posted in a Del Ray median and was subsequently removed.

One cryptic sign puzzled the neighborhood’s active BlueSky community. The sign reads “KEEP JD IN DEL RAY” which might either be a message of support for their political neighbor or, as most surmised, a cheeky message that Vance should not have the chance to move into the Naval Observatory, the official residence of the vice president
