Old Town, I don’t want to be rude, but you smell pretty bad.

Over the last week there’s been a particularly strong smell in the air around Old Town. Multiple conversations were overheard along King Street about the smell and one person submitted an anonymous tip about the odor.

“Over the past several days throughout Old Town it has smelled like sewage and just other really gross things,” the tipster said. “Does anyone know why this is happening?”

City officials said the smell is probably from “across the river” where Blue Plains Advanced Wastewater Treatment Plant has often been blamed for odors in Alexandria.

The City of Alexandria said other than a “slightly stronger tidal smell” there’s no obvious source.

“My T&ES team investigated a bit towards the Waterfront and detected a slightly stronger tidal smell but could not find the source or determined anything definite,” said Katie Bishop, media relations and editorial communications manager for the City of Alexandria.
