School zone speed camera enforcement starts next week in Alexandria

Speed cameras will soon be installed in three school zones in Alexandria (via ACPS)

The City of Alexandria’s speed cameras in school zones will start issuing tickets again starting with the beginning of the school year next week.

Enforcement is scheduled to kick off on Monday, Aug. 19.

Alexandria adopted an ordinance in 2022 for the speed cameras and has, so far, installed five of them in three school zones.

According to a release:

These cameras will start automatically issuing tickets to drivers who speed in school zones. The cameras are located at the following places:

  • Francis Hammond Middle School (Seminary Road, between Kenmore Avenue and North Jordan Street)
  • John Adams Elementary School and Ferdinand T. Day Elementary School (North Beauregard Street, between North Highview Lane and Reading Avenue)
  • George Washington Middle School (Mount Vernon Avenue, between Braddock Road and Luray Avenue)

The cameras are only active during school zone hours indicated by flashing signs. Drivers found in violation of the speed limit within the zones receive a $100 citation in the mail.
