An Alexandria man is being held without bond after allegedly burglarizing gas stations in Del Ray and Old Town North earlier this month.
The suspect allegedly gained entry into the two gas stations by breaking windows in the mechanic garage roll-up doors, according to a recently released search warrant affidavit.
The first incident occurred on Friday night, July 18, at the Exxon station at 703 N. Washington Street. The suspect allegedly smashed the window and tried to enter the convenience store area, but that door was locked, according to the search warrant affidavit.
“Video footage shows the male subject then leave the business carrying a gray toolbox with red lettering and red latches,” police said in the search warrant affidavit. “Video footage further revealed that the male sustained a cut to the rear of his right arm from broken glass.”
Investigators found blood and fingerprints left at the scene, and an employee at the business reported that a diagnostic device was inside the stolen toolbox. The suspect was videoed walking away from the scene east in the direction of Madison Street.
The Shell station at 1600 Mount Vernon Avenue in Del Ray was burglarized the following day, July 19. During the investigation, police found that the suspect gained entry by breaking a roll-up door window. He then allegedly stole $1,008 worth of cigarettes, other tobacco products and lighters.
The Alexandria Police Department issued an “attempt to identify” poster with images from the burglaries, and the suspect was quickly identified by an Alexandria Sheriff’s Deputy, according to the search warrant affidavit. The suspect was arrested that same day.
The suspect faces two felony counts of entering a structure with intent to commit larceny, with each count punishable by up to a year in prison and a $2,500 fine. The suspect goes to court on Oct. 9.
