Notes: Southern Baptist Convention expels Alexandria church for allowing women as pastors

Good Wednesday morning, Alexandria!

🌤️ Today’s weather: Expect a mostly sunny day with a high of 83 degrees as calm winds turn westward around 5 mph in the afternoon. The evening will bring partly cloudy skies and a low of 66 degrees, with south winds at 5 mph calming down later on.

🚨 You need to know

The Southern Baptist Convention voted overwhelmingly yesterday (Tuesday) to out First Baptist Church of Alexandria, a historic congregation that has for years allowed women to serve as pastors.

The Southern Baptist Convention only allows men to occupy the office of pastor/elder/overseer, but multiple women have served as pastors at the church and at least one has held the position of pastor at the church in Alexandria for nearly 20 years.

Representatives from the church told WTOP afterwards that they would continue to focus on first Baptist’s own work after the split.

First Baptist Church of Alexandria is not the first Southern Baptist church expelled from the denomination for its allowing women to serve as pastors. The Convention is scheduled to vote today to consider enshrining the ban in the Southern Baptist Convention’s constitution.
