APD officers resuscitate lifeless baby boy in Arlandria

Alexandria Police Department officers are being hailed as heroes after resuscitating a lifeless baby boy after its mother suddenly gave birth in Arlandria last month.

APD officers David Hiltz and Liam Reilly responded to a “frantic” 911 call in the 3800 block of Executive Avenue on Wednesday, May 29, to find that a woman “suddenly” gave birth and that the baby boy had no heartbeat, according to APD.

According to APD:

As first responders, their training immediately kicked in, and without hesitation, Officer Hiltz began performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) while Officer Reilly managed to keep the family calm. After two rounds of CPR Officer Hiltz located a pulse and the baby began to “fuss”, as Officer Hiltz described it. The sound of a newborn baby crying could be heard throughout the home.

Today, both mom and baby are in good health. After a short stay in the NICU, baby Luis IV and family returned home.

“My entire focus was on making sure baby Luis was going to be okay,” Hiltz said. “It felt amazing to hear him cry. In that moment all the stress and fear of the situation just left me.”

Both officers visited the family a week later.
