Depending on who you ask, Alexandria’s in for either a warmer-than-average winter or a snowy winter wonderland.

Alexandria Living Magazine reported that the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) is predicting higher than average temperatures in Northern Virginia this winter, somewhere in the range of 33-40% chance to have above average temperatures.

There wasn’t much snowfall last year, with a few light dusting but no significant accumulation.  The region will likely have more precipitation than average, NOAA said, but it’ll likely be rain rather than snow.

But Alexandria Living Magazine said that conclusion is far from unanimous. The Old Farmer’s Almanac and Washington Post both predicted above-average snowfall.

The Washington Post cited a strengthening El Niño as the main culprit for its snowy winter prediction. Still, the Post said the El Niño impact is far from assured, and warming spurred on by climate change could bump those icy storms up to rain.
