If all goes well, a new development in Old Town should be a pleasure to burn.

The Alexandria Fire Department (AFD) is holding a public meeting to discuss plans for a new burn building, a building designed for supervised training for firefighters.

A community meeting to discuss the new building is scheduled for Wednesday, Sept.  27, from 7-8:30 p.m. in the Lee Center Community Room (1108 Jefferson Street).

AFD is hoping to replace a 42-year-old building at 801 S. Payne Street in Old Town, near the Alexandria National Cemetery.

“The aging, 40-year-old building is no longer adequate for modern firefighter training,” AFD said in a release. “The new and improved structure will be specifically tailored for local incident response and enable a safe, up-to-date training environment for new AFD recruits and veterans alike.”

The project is currently working through the application process and, if approved, will start construction in spring 2024 and finish in fall 2025.
