🚨 You need to know

Many federal employees are still not reporting full-time to their offices in Alexandria after Covid, reports Alexandria Living Magazine.

That means the federal buildings in the city are underutilized and at least one will be partially vacated, according to the magazine, which cited a report from the Government Accountability Office (GAO).

Alexandria is home to a Dept. of Defense presence at the Mark Center, the National Science Foundation and the Patent and Trademark Office. After reviewing three weeks in the first three months of 2023, the GAO found that less than 16% of the National Science Foundation building in the Eisenhower East neighborhood was used while 23% of the Mark Center was being used.

The USPTO, meanwhile, has announced that it will cede about one-third of its office space in the Carlyle neighborhood in a bid to save money, the magazine reported.

The city’s economic development division predicted in 2022 that it would take 3-5 years for Alexandria, particularly its tourist and service industries, to bounce back from pandemic-era remote work conditions.
