This upcoming Monday is Juneteenth, a federal holiday celebrating the end of slavery in the United States. Around Alexandria, that means some services will be reduced or fully unavailable.
Yesterday, the City of Alexandria released a list of affected local services.
The highlights are that parking enforcement will be suspended across the city for metered spaces, residential permit parking districts, and areas with signed parking limits. However, this suspension of enforcement only applies to legal parking spaces. Parking in areas with no parking signs, like parking in loading zones or parking in spaces for persons with disabilities without the proper permit, will still get a ticket.
Because of the nature of the holiday, Alexandria’s Black History Museum and Freedom House will have extended hours for those looking to become more educated on local Black history.
“On Monday June 19, enjoy special extended hours from 11 a.m.-5 p.m. at Alexandria Black History Museum and Freedom House Museum,” a release from the city said. “At 10 a.m., come to the Black History Museum for a special encore Storytime and craft with Lillian S. Patterson.”
Alexandria’s courts, Animal Welfare League of Alexandria, the DMV and the impound facility will all be closed.

Animal Welfare League of Alexandria (AWLA): On Monday, June 19, the Animal Shelter will be closed. For animal emergencies or wildlife concerns, call 703.746.4444.
Courts: The Alexandria Circuit Court Clerk’s Office, Alexandria Circuit Court, Alexandria General District Court, Alexandria Juvenile Court, Domestic Relations District Court, and the Court Service Unit will be closed June 19.
Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV): All DMV customer service centers in Northern Virginia will be closed Monday, June 19.
Health Facilities: Alexandria Health Department, the Flora Krause Casey Pharmacy, and the Teen Wellness Center at Alexandria High School will be closed Monday, June 19.
Historic Alexandria: On Monday June 19, enjoy special extended hours from 11 a.m.-5 p.m. at Alexandria Black History Museum and Freedom House Museum. At 10 a.m., come to the Black History Museum for a special encore Storytime and craft with Lillian S. Patterson. Gadsby’s Tavern Museum and the Stabler-Leadbeater Apothecary Museum will be open from 1 to 5 p.m. All other City of Alexandria museums will be closed. Impound Facility: The City’s Impound Facility will be closed Monday, June 19. The Impound Facility is closed every Saturday and Sunday, as well as on all observed City holidays. Fees will continue to accrue on Saturdays and Sundays but not on holidays.
Libraries: On Monday, June 19, all Alexandria Library branches, including the Alexandria Law Library will be closed. Visit Alexandria Library for more information.
Parking: On Monday, June 19, the Alexandria Police Department will suspend enforcement of parking restrictions for metered spaces, residential permit parking districts, and other areas with signed parking time limits. This suspension of enforcement, which applies only to the restrictions at legal parking spaces, does not permit parking in any location where it is normally prohibited (for example, “no parking” zones, loading zones or spaces for persons with disabilities). Temporary “no parking” signs will be enforced on June 19.
Recreation, Nature, and Arts Centers: On Monday, June 19, the Charles Houston Recreation Center and Patrick Henry Recreation Center will be open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. All other City recreation and nature centers, including Chinquapin Park Recreation Center and Aquatics Facility, will be closed. Outdoor Pools: On Monday, June 19, Old Town Pool (1609 Cameron St) and Warwick Pool (3301 Landover St.) will be open 10 a.m.-4:45 p.m. and Memorial Pool (901 Wythe St.) will be open 10 a.m.-2:45 p.m. Potomac Yard Park Interactive Fountain (2501 Potomac Ave.) will be open on June 19, from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Visit Aquatics for more information.

Resource Recovery: Residential trash, recycling, and yard waste collection will be delayed by one day during the week of Monday, June 19. Curbside waste food collection schedule will not be affected. The Household Hazardous Waste & Electronics Recycling Center will be closed on June 19.
Schools: All Alexandria City Public Schools and administrative offices will be closed Monday, June 19.
Transit: The Alexandria Transit Company (DASH) bus service will operate on a regular weekday schedule on Monday, June 19. The free King Street Trolley will operate from King Street Metro to Alexandria City Hall every 15 minutes, from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Visit dashbus.com for more information.
