Alexandria City Public Schools is requesting an extension of its controversial school resource officer (SRO) program through the end of the 2022-2023 school year.

School Board Chair Meagan Alderton says that the extension is part of the reimagining of the $800,000 program, as Superintendent Gregory Hutchings, Jr. will work to develop a School Law Enforcement Partnership (SLEP) Advisory Group and formulate an SRO plan to present to City Council next year.

The case against a man suspected of killing his West End neighbor in December will go to a grand jury next month.

David Jasante Cunningham has been held without bond in the Alexandria jail since his January 11 arrest on a second-degree murder charge of 23-year-old Melia Jones. Police found Jones dead in her in her apartment in the unit block of South Van Dorn Street on Tuesday, Dec. 7, at around 2:40 p.m.

Two Alexandria juveniles were arrested earlier this month for shooting a gun in Arlandria.

The incident occurred at around 11 p.m. in the 3800 block of Executive Avenue. Police were alerted by a witness that two juveniles shot a handgun in an alleyway and fled on foot. The witness saw the 15 and 17-year-old suspects then run into a nearby apartment building and the lights turn on in an apartment, according to a search warrant.

An Alexandria Police Department officer was arrested last week and charged with domestic assault and battery, according to an APD news release.

Police said the officer, 30-year-old Richard Haynes, is on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation. The alleged incident occurred in the city on Nov. 27, 2021. The release did not provide more information.

Three men are facing years behind bars for the January shooting in a West End 7-Eleven parking lot that left a bystander shot in the neck.

On March 14, the Alexandria Grand Jury charged city residents Maurice Turner, 18, and Donovan Copeland, 20, and Fairfax County resident Damonte Martin, 21, with three felonies: malicious wounding, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, and maliciously shooting at an occupied vehicle.

A 33-year-old Alexandria resident has been indicted on a first-degree murder charge, a more serious charge than he was previously facing, in connection to a stabbing at BJ’s Wholesale Club in the Landmark area.

The indictment, which a Grand Jury returned March 14, charges Rakibul Islam Fakir on the one felony count of first-degree murder, which is punishable by life in prison, according to a news release from the Office of the Commonwealth’s Attorney.

(Updated at 11:30 a.m. on March 22) Not much was taken in an overnight break-in at Lyle’s Crouch Traditional Academy earlier this month, although the suspect gained entry through the roof and no alarms went off.

On Wednesday morning, March 9, staff at the elementary school at 530 S. St. Asaph Street in Old Town called police after finding classrooms vandalized. Parents were not notified of the incident since there is no threat to school safety.

A 20-year-old Washington D.C. man was arrested in Old Town earlier this month for carjacking an Uber driver and her customer.

Raphael G. Snead, Jr. was arrested at his grandmother’s house on March 3 by Alexandria Police in the 700 block of North Fayette Street. He was transferred on March 8 to Montgomery County, where he is currently being held without bond.

Three months after he allegedly assaulted Alexandria police officers in the Carlyle neighborhood and fled the scene, Chukwunyere Onuoha has been apprehended in Texas and is awaiting extradition back to Alexandria.

According to a release from APD, on Dec. 27, police responded to a report of an individual in a domestic dispute in the 2400 block of Mandeville Lane, near the Hoffman Town Center. APD said they located Onuoha in the nearby 200 block of Swamp Fox Road.

A 20-year-old Alexandria man is being held without bond after allegedly shooting a woman in the face in the stairwell of a Landmark area apartment building.

The incident occurred on February 9 at around 4:45 p.m. at the Brent Place apartments at 375 S. Reynolds Street. Terrell Talley, who lives in the building, was arrested March 3 and charged with malicious wounding.

An 18-year-old Alexandria man was arrested on gun and drug charges after backing his car against a police cruiser and allegedly attempting to drive away.

The incident occurred in the unit block of Oronoco Street near the Alexandria waterfront on Wednesday, Feb. 16.
