The Alexandria Animal Welfare League has been overrun but a veritable vermintide as it seeks to find a new home for five spicy rats.

“Anise, Basil, Nutmeg, Paprika and Saffron may sound spicy, but these ladies are the sweetest rats in town,” said Gina Hardter, spokesperson for the AWLA.

Don’t let his intimidating gaze and sleek demeanor fool you, staff at the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria say that Dana is a love bug.

“While young and active, Dana is also an affectionate love bug,” said Audrey Alessi, a spokesperson for the AWLA. “Crouch down to greet him and he’ll put his paws on your lap so you can more easily pet him.”

Shyla is a green gecko who is at least three, though AWLA spokesperson Gina Hardter said she could be older.

As a reptile, Hardter said Shyla is a cold-blooded pet who will need a home that can provide a heat source for her enclosure. Shlya is also an insectivore, but there are a variety of nutritional products that can keep her well-fed with the protein and calcium she needs.

While many Alexandrians are struggling to figure out how to provide for themselves during the pandemic, the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria (AWLA) is taking the strain off some local pet owners trying to take care of their animals.

Since mid-March, the local animal shelter has donated 5,000 pounds of supplies to a Community Pet Pantry. The AWLA said the pantry is also stocked with donations from animal-loving Northern Virginia residents offering food, bed, toys and more.
