Acclaimed D.C. Indian restaurant Karma Modern’s Alexandria spin-off could be opening sometime next month.
Karma Modern staff told ALXnow that the plan is to open Kismet (111 N. Pitt Street) in mid-late October.

Visit Alexandria launched a new advertising campaign last week focusing on attracting Black visitors. Using federal funding from the American Rescue Plan Act, Visit Alexandria hired D.C.-based Creative Theory Agency to develop the “Drop-in” campaign with help from business owners and leaders around the city.
“We’re thrilled to roll out this major new campaign to build on our last 8 years of painting a more complete and inclusive picture of Alexandria,” said Visit Alexandria President & CEO Patricia Washington. “Our destination is more ready than ever for this campaign given the City of Alexandria’s investment and development of new Black history experiences through the Office of Historic Alexandria, citywide priority around race and social equity, as well as newly-opened businesses and the transformation of our waterfront.”

Alexandria is experiencing mural mania, as three new murals have been painted in Old Town. It’s more than just a splash of color on the walls, too.
Pacers Running at 1301 King Street is celebrating their 30th anniversary on October 7 with the official unveiling of their mural. Designed by D.C. artist Katherine Campagna, the mural reads the Pacers logo, “FOR EVERY RUN” in italics, as if the letters are running down the street.
Alexandria celebrating PARK(ing) Day — “On Sep 17, the City will celebrate PARK(ing) Day, a worldwide event promoting public green space in urban areas by temporarily reclaiming several on-street parking spaces, transforming them into imaginative park spaces, or ‘parklets.’” [Twitter]

While outdoor dining along King Street has been a blessing for many local restaurants, Village Brauhaus (710 King Street) wasn’t so lucky. But now the restaurant — and former castle — is hoping to take that same principle to the roof.
In an application to the Planning Commission, Village Brauhaus owners Chelsea and William Gross are asking for permission to expand the restaurant dining to the roof.
Alexandria was spared from significant flooding this week after remnants of Hurricane Ida swept through the East Coast. The only flooding found was on lower King Street in Old Town, where businesses laid sandbags at windows and doorways.
“We’re open inside, but if you want to eat you’re probably going to have to come barefoot,” a hostess at Mai Thai told ALXnow on Wednesday.
Salon Meraki’s founding location at 1101 Queen Street will quadruple in size when it expands into a neighboring space this fall.
Kathleen Le opened her 900 square-foot nail salon on November 1, 2017, and hopes to keep the tradition alive with a November 1 opening at 300 N. Henry Street, which was previously occupied by ARC Document Solutions. She also owns a second salon at 320 King Street.
