The public is invited to discuss more than a dozen transportation improvement projects that have major implications in Alexandria’s West End.
The West End Transportation Improvements Projects Open House will be held Thursday, Oct. 29, from 5-8 p.m. at the Alexandria City High School Minnie Howard Campus (3775 W. Braddock Road). Residents will be able to discuss multiple projects with city staff.
Alexandria may not be ground zero in the growing contentious public debate over the impact of data centers. But the city is gearing up to address an increasing number of indirect consequences.
Even if not located in the city, data centers “still have regional impacts — they don’t stop at a city line or county line,” Mayor Alyia Gaskins said at the Aug. 26 Northern Virginia Regional Elected Leaders Summit.
Data center plans just outside Alexandria city limits has raised concerns among residents and officials.
Starwood Capital Group filed the permit application and building plans to Fairfax County for the 34-acre Plaza 500 site at 6299 Edsall Road in Lincolnia. The application is for Plaza 500 South, the first of two data center buildings it is seeking.
Speed limits on Edsall Road and S. Pickett Street in the West End will be reduced from 35 to 25 mph in April.
The reduction will apply to the full length of Edsall Road from S. Pickett Street to the city limits, and Yoakum Parkway between Stevenson Avenue and Edsall Road.
The Alexandria Police Department arrested a Woodbridge teenager in Landmark this month after he was allegedly found in possession of fentanyl, more than seven ounces of marijuana, a loaded handgun and nearly $1,500 in cash.
The 17-year-old suspect agreed to meet an undercover APD officer on Dec. 11 to sell five fentanyl pills in a parking lot at the 5700 block of Edsall Road, after he had advertised selling drugs on Instagram. His arrest followed an undercover operation that began in October, according to a recently released search warrant affidavit.

The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) briefly shut down two lanes of I-395 and received an escort from Virginia State Police and Safety Service Patrol.
The Alexandria Police Department says it is investigating multiple weapons violations over the weekend, including a man who was shot in the shoulder in a suspected carjacking in the West End.
The first incident occurred on Saturday, Sept. 17, around midnight in the 2000 block of N. Beauregard Street. The victim reported to police that her Airbnb guest pulled a handgun on her and fled the area in a black Kia Forte, according to the police scanner.
The Alexandria Police Department is investigating two back-to-back shootings early Sunday and Monday in the West End.
Police were notified of multiple gunshots on Sunday at around 2 a.m. in the 200 block of N. Pickett Street near Holmes Run. Officers in the area heard the shots, according to scanner traffic, although no injuries were reported or arrests made.
