Wegmans hiring event Tuesday for new Alexandria store — “Wegmans Food Markets is hosting a virtual hiring event Tuesday, Oct. 12, seeking to fill more than 350 part- and full-time positions across 14 stores throughout the Virginia area, including the Wegmans opening in spring 2022 at 150 Stovall St., in Alexandria’s Carlyle neighborhood, the company announced.” [Alexandria Living Magazine]

Vehicle overturned in Lincolnia, found empty — “4900 Bl. of Manitoba Dr. Alexandria, V.A. Fairfax Cty Fire on scene of a single vehicle overturned collision with no occupants found inside the vehicle. Occupants are believed to have fled the scene.” [DC Realtime News]

ALXnow’s top stories this week in Alexandria

Alexandria was spared from significant flooding this week after remnants of Hurricane Ida swept through the East Coast. The only flooding found was on lower King Street in Old Town, where businesses laid sandbags at windows and doorways.

“We’re open inside, but if you want to eat you’re probably going to have to come barefoot,” a hostess at Mai Thai told ALXnow on Wednesday.

Pets rescued from Hurricane Ida in Louisiana up for adoption in Alexandria

It’s been a long week for the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria. This week as Hurricane Ida pounded its way up the East Coast, a team from the AWLA flew down and rescue five dogs and four kittens from a Louisiana shelter.

“We’re glad to work with this amazing team to help dozens of animals find their homes across our community,” said Katie DeWillems, AWLA’s director of operations.

Tortoiseshell kitties Bella and Gigi are waiting to get adopted in Alexandria

Female tortoiseshell cats Bella and Gigi are waiting inside an office at the Animal Welfare League until they get adopted.

“Their human officemate reports they are a lot of fun to share an office with — as long as you have extra hands to do your work and pet your new feline friends,” said AWLA spokesperson Gina Hardter. “We’d rate them not so high as office assistants but excellent as cuddling partners.”

Man arrested after shooting cat under bed in Landmark apartment

An Alexandria man was arrested on July 29 after shooting and killing his cat during an argument with his girlfriend in their Landmark area apartment.

Alexandria Police responded to a call for shots fired at an apartment in the 6000 block of Edsall Road at around 1:15 a.m. The suspect’s girlfriend said she and her boyfriend got into an argument while watching television. The woman said that she recently bought a handgun after a destruction of property incident, and that her boyfriend took the gun and shot a round at their bed in anger.

Capitol officer who committed suicide was from Alexandria — “Very sad news: @MikevWUSA @wusa9 reports MPD Officer Kyle DeFreytag died by suicide in July after defending the US Capitol on January 6. His obituary says he was a hiker, drummer, motorcyclist, and resident of Alexandria, who served with MPD for five years” [WUSA9]

Alexandria, neighboring health directors recommend wearing face masks indoors — “Today, all five Northern Virginia Health Directors issued a joint letter of interim recommendations for mask wearing in Northern Virginia. The letter was issued by Health Directors from the City of Alexandria, as well as Arlington, Fairfax, Loudoun and Prince William counties to Northern Virginia Mayors, Chairs and Chief Administrative Officers with the recommendation that individuals wear masks while indoors in government and other public settings, regardless of vaccination status.” [City of Alexandria]

Bonded kitties Raven and Chenille are looking to be adopted in Alexandria

Kitties Chenille and Raven are inseparable, and they’re up for adoption as a pair via the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria.

Raven is a male brown tabby and Chenille is a black short-haired female. The kittens are four months old and aren’t related by blood, and quickly became best friends after moving into the AWLA.

Bertha, the tuxedo-wearing cat, needs a new home for her spats

Bertha is always dressed for company. The nine-year-old short-haired cat has a built-in tuxedo, and is up for adoption via the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria.

Bertha is part of AWLA’s Super Seniors Adoption Extravaganza event this weekend, where adoption costs have been waived for more than a dozen animals over eight years old, including Bean, Cole and Mickey.
