After spending more than half his life with the Alexandria Police Department, Bennie Evans Jr. is taking a small break.

Not for long, he says, because he wants to get back to doing what he considers his passion — working with people. Last month, Evans was congratulated for 28 years with APD and four years with the Sheriff’s Office at his retirement ceremony with city and APD leadership at police headquarters.

Alexandria’s top prosecutor is declining to bring criminal charges against officers involved in the Alexandria Police Department’s in-custody death of a Woodbridge man last summer.

Officers involved in the Aug. 15, 2025 death of Allan F. Tucker, II, will not be charged, Commonwealth’s Attorney Bryan Porter announced this afternoon (Thursday), following investigations by the medical examiner and Northern Virginia’s Critical Incident Review Team.

The Alexandria Police Department has adopted a new hate crime policy following a Christmas Day incident in which a suspect reportedly threw groceries and shouted homophobic statements at a man in a store on Christmas Day.

Police Chief Tarrick McGuire announced the department’s first-ever policy for bias incidents and hate crimes, developed over the past year, at a press conference this morning (Monday).

An unattended Amazon delivery truck that was stolen from Duke Street in Landmark on Tuesday night was later recovered in a nearby parking lot.

The truck was reported stolen to the Alexandria Police Department just after 9 p.m. Tuesday at the 5200 block of Duke Street, APD spokesperson Tracy Walker told ALXnow. Shortly after, police recovered the vehicle less than a mile away in a parking lot at the 5300 block of Holmes Run Parkway.

A Maryland man faces felony charges after being arrested for trying to cash an altered check at a bank in Old Town.

The suspect from Oxon Hill was arrested inside the bank at the 100 block of S. Fairfax Street on Dec. 15 after trying to cash a check for $1,950, while the account holder told the branch manager that the check was, in fact, made out to the man who delivers her newspapers for $20.

An emergency protective order has been issued against an Alexandria man after he allegedly stabbed his girlfriend’s son in the face with a fork on New Year’s Day.

The 41-year-old suspect was arrested and charged with malicious wounding after the incident, which occurred at around 11:30 a.m. in an apartment at the 5300 block of Essex Court in the West End, near the Winkler Botanical Preserve.

The Alexandria Police Department has recovered the remains of an Alexandria man who went missing earlier this month.

Hieu Ngo, 29, was found dead yesterday (Thursday) in a wooded area of Joseph Hensley Park at 4200 Eisenhower Avenue near the Capital Beltway, according to an announcement from APD this morning (Friday). An initial investigation “does not indicate that the death is suspicious,” and the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner is working to determine the official cause of death, according to the announcement.

The Office of the Alexandria Independent Policing Auditor is continuing to investigate the August death of a Woodbridge man under Alexandria Police Department custody.

The office’s investigation into the death of 32-year-old Allan F. Tucker II is nearing its final stages, Independent Policing Auditor Ameratu Kamara told City Council during its Tuesday meeting. Once it is complete, the Independent Community Police Review Board is expected to host an early 2026 public hearing.

The Alexandria City School Board voted unanimously last night (Thursday) to extend its contract with the Alexandria Police Department through June 30.

The extended memorandum of understanding (MOU) will give the School Board’s Governance Committee more time to draft a new contract proposal that fully addresses its concerns, Division Counsel Robert Falconi said at last night’s meeting.

First responders transported a man to the hospital early Sunday morning after he accidentally shot himself in the leg in Seminary Hill, according to the Alexandria Police Department.

The 23-year-old man sustained a non-life threatening injury and was transported to Inova Fairfax Hospital from an apartment parking lot at the 4600 block of Seminary Road, according to APD dispatches.
