The city of Alexandria will showcase progress and accept feedback for the ongoing Duke Street Land Use Plan during an open house next week.

The open house will feature informational “interactive stations,” and attendees can “engage with staff about specific opportunities they see on the corridor” from Alexandria Union Station to Van Dorn Street.

A pet store from Del Ray opened its newest location over the weekend at the Belle View Shopping Center.

The Dog Store is now open at 1612 Belle View Blvd, replacing a vacancy left by the Pampered Pet Boutique & Bakery earlier this year. Owner Paul Haire founded the shop’s first location in Del Ray in 2014, after opening Your Dog’s Best Friends daycare in 2003.

First responders transported a man to the hospital early Sunday morning after he accidentally shot himself in the leg in Seminary Hill, according to the Alexandria Police Department.

The 23-year-old man sustained a non-life threatening injury and was transported to Inova Fairfax Hospital from an apartment parking lot at the 4600 block of Seminary Road, according to APD dispatches.

Historic Lighthouse Repairs Coming Next Year — “A 2014 NPS report describes the exterior of the [Jones Point] lighthouse as in ‘good condition’ with restoration needed for the interior … Thirteen years later, no additional major restoration projects have been undertaken at the site, according to Jerry Garcia, NPS chief of staff for the George Washington Memorial Parkway. However, help will soon be coming for the winded structure. Garcia explained that a comprehensive repair project with a ‘majority focus’ on the exterior of the lighthouse building will begin in 2026.” [The Alexandria Times]

It was a warm Thanksgiving day at Sheltercare, a short-term group home that provides services to youth in Alexandria’s West End.

Five out of the nine resident kids there didn’t go home Thursday. Instead, they stayed in to watch football, sing karaoke and cook a delicious meal and desserts.

The Alexandria Police Department responded to an incident late this morning (Friday) in which a man reportedly shot himself in the leg in Eisenhower West. 

The 43-year-old man told officers he accidentally shot himself while placing a firearm into his pocket, according to dispatches from APD. The man self-reported the incident to police around 11:20 a.m. from the 2800 block of Telek Place.

A team of professionals in Alexandria has received a top statewide award for its work responding to allegations of child abuse.

Earlier this month, the Multi-Disciplinary Team (MDT) from the Center for Alexandria’s Children received the 2025 MDT of the Year recognition by the Children’s Advocacy Centers of Virginia (CACVA) at the Virginia Crimes Against Children Conference in Virginia Beach.
