More details released on $35K jewelry smash-and-grab in Old Town

A 23-year-old Alexandria man heads to court this month after allegedly stealing a necklace and bracelet valued at $34,750 from an Old Town jewelry store and breaking into nearby Christ Church to hide.

Around 10 a.m. on June 4, an off-duty Alexandria sheriff’s deputy was working security at the shop in the 600 block of King Street when she heard banging sounds outside and saw a man in a black hooded sweatshirt steal the bracelet and necklace and flee on foot. The off-duty deputy then chased the suspect into an alley in the 100 block of N. Washington Street, according to a recently released search warrant affidavit.

Police: Alexandria child with gun in backpack was left by mom at Reagan National Airport

More details have been released regarding an 8-year-old child who was found with a loaded handgun in his backpack after school in the Child Protective Services office at 4850 Mark Center Drive earlier this year.

On Monday, March 2, the child was found sitting alone at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport after his mother was arrested for larceny, credit card theft and assault in another area of the airport, according to a recently released search warrant affidavit.

Seifeldein spars with Beyer at candidate forum as congressional primary approaches

A former Alexandria City Council member used a candidate forum to rip into Rep. Don Beyer (D-8th) as the Democratic congressional primary draws closer and heats up.

At the Arlington County Democratic Committee’s candidate forum on July 1, Mo Seifeldein went after Beyer on campaign finances and banking reform. Seifeldein also said the incumbent “hasn’t pushed back” on the Trump administration or Republicans in Congress.

UPDATE: Fireworks suspected in fire that displaced ARHA residents in Braddock Metro neighborhood

Fireworks are believed to be the cause of a fire at an Alexandria Redevelopment and Housing Authority home in the Braddock Metro neighborhood yesterday (July 5).

The fire was reported around 11:01 p.m. on the roof of the home at 1318 Madison Street, part of the Samuel Madden Homes community. Units from Alexandria, Fairfax County and Arlington County had responded to the call and encountered smoke coming from the roof of a three-story rowhome. An Alexandria Fire Department spokesperson told ALXnow the fire had started on the exterior at the gutters and spread to the roof and attic.

West End suspect arrested for apartment burglary one block from his home

An Alexandria man goes to court this month after being arrested for allegedly burglarizing a West End apartment a block away from where he lived and using stolen credit cards.

The resident of the apartment in the 5700 block of Dunster Court reported the theft of the credit cards after returning home on the morning of Oct. 9, 2025, according to a recently released search warrant affidavit. The victim told police the back door to the apartment was kicked in, the suspect rifled through the kitchen and stole a lockbox from his bedroom closet containing multiple credit cards and a Social Security card.

Alexandria to celebrate its 277th birthday and America’s 250th with fireworks

After many of the D.C. region’s fireworks shows have come and gone, Alexandrians will have another to look forward to this weekend.

The Alexandria and USA Birthday Celebration is set for Saturday, July 11 at Oronoco Bay Park (100 Madison Street). This year’s event celebrates Alexandria’s 277th birthday and America’s 250th.

Alexandria’s jobless count falls below 3,000 for first time since mid-2025

As the number of Alexandria residents counted as unemployed dropped below 3,000 for the first time in more than a year, the city’s jobless rate reached its lowest level since April 2025, according to new state data.

A total of 96,006 Alexandria residents were counted in the civilian workforce for the month, with 2,888 seeking jobs, according to figures reported July 1 by the Virginia Department of Workforce Development and Advancement.

Alexandria’s police review board sends back ‘incomplete’ report on in-custody death

Alexandria’s Independent Community Policing Review Board wants more questions answered on last summer’s in-custody death of Allan Tucker II.

The board unanimously voted on Wednesday night (July 1) to inform City Council that a report on the Alexandria Police Department response to the incident is incomplete and needs further investigation.

Former UPS employee held without bond after 150+ packages stolen from Alexandria facility

A 28-year-old D.C. man is being held without bond after allegedly stealing more than 150 packages from a UPS shipping facility in Alexandria.

The suspect worked at a UPS facility in Hyattsville, Md., for three months in 2022 and 2023, according to a recently released search warrant affidavit. From April 4 to as recently as June 15, the suspect was captured on security cameras arriving at the UPS facility at 5601 Eisenhower Avenue in rental cars with Virginia tags and entering the building through a bay door.
