Carlyle neighborhood street shutting down for four months due to stormwater improvements

Some upgrades to Alexandria’s stormwater management will mean a months-long closure of a road between the Carlyle neighborhood and Old Town.

The RiverRenew Project will require the closure of Jamieson Avenue between Holland Lane and S West Street, just north of the Alexandria National Cemetery.

Panel discussion next week tackles climate change impacts and mitigation in Alexandria

Next week, Agenda Alexandria has its sights set on climate change: looking both at how things like rising heat and water levels will impact the city, and what the city can do to mitigate that impact.

The panel discussion is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Lyceum (201 S. Washington Street) and can be streamed online. Admittance is $10.

New apartment development in Old Town riles up nearby residents

Stop me if you’ve heard this one before: a new development planned in Old Town is stirring up community frustration about height and density.

A meeting of the Board of Architectural Review (BAR) last week became a bitter argument between architecture firm Winstanley Architects, the lawyer for developer Hoffman and Associates, and nearby residents who say the plans don’t fit with the neighborhood.

Alexandria considering bike lanes for Mount Vernon Trail route into Old Town

The Friends of the Mount Vernon Trail is rallying support to get a section of roadway into Old Town North converted into a bike lane.

The plan would be to take the right lane of East Abingdon Drive — which runs parallel to the George Washington Memorial Parkway — and convert it into a two-way buffered cycletrack connected to the Mount Vernon Trail, Patch first reported.

Alexandria teachers raise nearly $1 million in crowdfunding

With the new school year underway, teachers in Alexandria City Public Schools (ACPS) are crowdfunding everything from iPads to basic teaching supplies.

Non-profit organization DonorsChoose gives teachers in ACPS a platform to discuss their specific material needs. One teacher led an effort to help students make better social media content, but many of the requests are for basic needs like whiteboards and construction paper.

King Street getting new stormwater improvements with resurfacing this month

It’s been an uncharacteristically busy day for King Street news.

The street could be getting new bike lanes and a sidewalk on the north side of the road in a few years. In the short term, however, a section of the street is getting resurfaced and some stormwater improvements this month.

More sidewalks and bike lanes could be coming to King Street near the Bradlee Shopping Center

Some changes could be coming to the section of King Street near the Bradlee Shopping Center, but they’re at least four or five years away.

The City of Alexandria announced today that it will start a King Street-Bradlee Safety and Mobility Enhancements Project later this month. The project will look at potential improvements to King Street just northwest of Quaker Lane along the Bradlee Shopping Center.

Police: Minor injuries reported in midnight robbery near Fort Ward

Update on 9/14 — The victim, who police say sustained minor injuries, died on Wednesday, Sept. 13. Ricky Dehate, 48, has been charged with second-degree murder.

Earlier: The Alexandria Police Department said one person sustained minor injuries in a robbery just before midnight on Monday near Fort Ward.

Civil rights Freedom Rider speaking in Alexandria later this month

Freedom Rider Joan Trumpauer Mulholland, who was imprisoned in Mississippi for her civil rights activism, is scheduled to speak at a meeting of the Alexandria Community Remembrance Project later this month.

The Office of Historic Alexandria said Mulholland will speak at the free event at 1 p.m. in The Lyceum (201 S Washington Street) on Saturday, Sept. 23.

Alexandria pursuing grant to help step up patrols and investigations

Alexandria is pursuing a Federal grant to help hire more police officers for patrol and investigations units left understaffed by higher-priority investigations.

At a meeting tomorrow, the City Council is scheduled to vote on a grant application to the FY 2023 Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) Program. The vote is largely ceremonial: retroactively approving a submission filed in August for up to $43,152 and allowing Alexandria’s City Manager to file all necessary documents.
