A new outdoor seating area at Union Sandwich Company (101 N. Union Street) could both alleviate overcrowding in the store and give visitors a new place to sit and enjoy Old Town.

The sandwich shop owner filed a special use permit with the City of Alexandria to add three tables with four seats each and some planters and rope to delineate the area.

The Alexandria Police Department (APD) said an incident last Friday where a child brought a gun to school was a complete accident.

In a release, APD said the child grabbed the wrong backpack and the one they grabbed contained a family member’s legally owned firearm.

In 1939, a young Black man walked into the Barrett Branch Library and requested a library card, when he was refused, he picked up a book, took a seat, and started to read. The process was repeated until five black men sat in silence in the library reading books.

Didn’t get enough Irish cultural celebration at the St. Patrick’s Day Parade this weekend? A group of musicians are celebrating Irish folk music at a concert in Alexandria this weekend.

The Irish Breakfast Band — a group consisting of around 15 musicians with a variety of fiddles, flutes, hammered dulcimers and more — is playing at the Lyceum (201 S. Washington Street) this Saturday (March 9) from 7-8:30 p.m.

One item in the city’s budget items will roll out across Alexandria streets throughout this year.

In a newsletter, Alexandria Mayor Justin Wilson said the proposed FY 2024 budget includes $5.25 million for road repaving around Alexandria, with $64.6 million for the next decade.
