City staff has found that a proposal to build a new western access to the Braddock Road Metro station doesn’t justify the substantial costs associated with the project.
Currently, the station is separated from the trail by the CSXT tracks. To access Del Ray and the trail, pedestrians have to walk a block south to Braddock Road.
Several options were presented for how to connect the Metro station to the Potomac Yard Trail and George Washington Middle School west of the site, but at a Braddock Implementation Advisory Group meeting on Oct. 16, staff shot down each proposal as more costly than initially anticipated.
Three alternatives were considered:
- A tunnel beneath the tracks into the station: $19-22 million
- A single-span, prefabricated truss bridge: $14-18 million
- A signature span bridge, more complicated than the truss bridge: $16-23 million
Staff said that the alternatives don’t add enough accessibility to the Metro to justify the cost.
“All three alternatives don’t provide that much in terms of additional access,” staff said. “For the investment that the city would have to put out for this bridge, it’s really really difficult to justify it. Right now, the city doesn’t have any plans to fund such an endeavor, but this was an important study. We wanted to make sure it was done so if the City Council had quesitons we can answer them.”

Potomac Harmony is Back! Following a gap year of competing, then virtual rehearsals during the pandemic, followed by the well-earned retirement of our long-term director, a year of a director search, Potomac Harmony hit the regional contest stage in Concord, North Carolina in March for the first time since 2018! It was exhilarating, reaffirming, and rewarding!
The chorus hit all of its goals, the biggest of which was to have fun and sing our best on contest stage — we did both! Because we earned a score over 400 points, our new Director, Allison Lynskey, was awarded the Novice Director award, photo above. Additionally, one of our charter members, Jackie Bottash, was nominated for and honored with the Leadership Excellence award. It was a celebratory weekend!
