Momentum Collective Presents Disney's The Lion King Jr.
Celebrating Community, Culture, and the Transformative Power of the Arts
ALEXANDRIA, Va. – Momentum Collective Inc. proudly presents Disney's The Lion King Jr., taking the stage November 12-14 at the Lee Center, 1108 Jefferson Street, Alexandria, VA 22314. Produced in partnership with the City of Alexandria Department of Recreation, Parks & Cultural Activities and supported in part by a grant from the Office of the Arts, this vibrant production showcases the talents of 48 Alexandria youth performers and celebrates the power of community through the performing arts.
Directed by Jason Ellis with choreography by Rosslyn Burrs, The Lion King Jr. marks Momentum Collective's seventh youth musical production and features 20 musical numbers performed by an energetic cast of young artists. Known for its dynamic integration of movement and storytelling, Momentum Collective brings its signature artistic style to this beloved Disney classic, creating a production that is both visually stunning and emotionally resonant.
Based on Disney's award-winning film and Broadway phenomenon, The Lion King Jr. follows the journey of young Simba as he navigates friendship, loss, responsibility, and self-discovery on his path to becoming king. Filled with unforgettable music, memorable characters, and powerful themes of courage, identity, and belonging, the story continues to inspire audiences of all ages.
Audiences can look forward to standout musical moments including "I Just Can't Wait to Be King," "He Lives in You," "Rafiki Mourns," "Shadowland," and "Can You Feel the Love Tonight." Through expressive choreography, powerful ensemble work, and imaginative staging, the production highlights Momentum Collective's commitment to using movement as a central tool for storytelling.
More than a musical, this production serves as a celebration of the rich cultural traditions and artistic influences that inspired The Lion King. From its music and costumes to its scenic design, the show honors the beauty and diversity of African culture. In that spirit, audience members are warmly encouraged to attend performances dressed in traditional African attire as a way of joining in the celebration.
"The Lion King Jr. is a powerful reminder of what can happen when young people are given the opportunity to create, collaborate, and share their voices through the arts," said Director Jason Ellis. "This production reflects the strength of our community and the ways the arts bring people together across generations and backgrounds."
Momentum Collective remains dedicated to providing high-quality performing arts experiences that inspire creativity, foster confidence, and strengthen community connections. This year's production exemplifies that mission by bringing together dozens of young performers, families, artists, and community partners in a shared celebration of storytelling and culture.
