Alexandria City Council to appoint interim independent policing auditor tonight

The Alexandria City Council will appoint an interim independent policing auditor at its meeting tonight (Oct. 27).

The interim auditor to investigate allegations of police misconduct will be revealed at City Council’s meeting at the Del Pepper Community Resource Center (4850 Mark Center Drive).

Ameratu Kamara, the city’s auditor since January 2025, resigned earlier this month. Kamara was the city’s second-ever auditor, after the death of auditor Kim Neal, who was appointed in 2022.

The auditor reports to the city’s Independent Community Policing Review Board, which was founded in 2021. Kamara resigned after City Council requested more information on her report on the death of Allan Tucker II in police custody, which is the first case the review board has investigated in five years.

The auditor was also supposed to conduct an investigation of a fatal police-involved shooting in the West End in May.

The city will conduct a national search to fill the independent auditor position.

The review board’s Oct. 7 meeting was cancelled following Kamara’s resignation, and the next is scheduled on Nov. 4.
