Most adults over 50 know the numbers their doctor checks every year: blood pressure, cholesterol, weight.
Almost none of them know how hard they can squeeze.
That number matters more than it sounds. Doctors and researchers increasingly treat grip strength as a window into overall health, the Wall Street Journal reported this week. A University of Michigan physical medicine professor told the Journal that grip strength predicts cardiovascular disease better than blood pressure does. A weak grip has also been linked to higher risk of type 2 diabetes, osteoporosis, stroke, and dementia. A Stanford longevity physician called it “like another vital sign.”
It isn’t really about your hands. Grip strength is a stand-in for total-body strength. Muscle loss speeds up in our 50s and 60s, and a weakening grip is often the first measurable sign of the frailty, falls, and lost independence that follow.
The good news is that strength responds to training at any age. But the doctors were clear that squeezing a tennis ball won’t fix it. What works is whole-body strength training.
That’s the idea behind Fall Into Fitness, a 21-day coached program from Revolutionary Fitness, the strength and longevity studio at 215 N. Payne St. in Old Town. It opens with a Full Body
Fitness Assessment that uses objective tools, including a grip strength dynamometer and a sit test, so you start with a real baseline instead of a guess.
Revolutionary Fitness has been testing grip strength for years. Every member is tested before their first session and retested every quarter for as long as they train with the studio.
You don’t have to wonder whether you’re getting stronger. You see the number.
From there, participants train in semi-private sessions of four to six people, or 1-on-1 private training up to three times a week. The coaching focuses on building strength, protecting muscle and bone, and moving with confidence. Participants also get weekly check-ins with their coaches throughout the program.
There’s no contract and no automatic enrollment into a membership when the 21 days end. Spots are limited, so every participant gets hands-on coaching.
