Alexandria and the rest of the nation will take a day to reflect and remember Friday (Sept. 11) on the 25th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks.
The City of Alexandria will hold its annual 9/11 remembrance ceremony from 10-11 a.m. Friday at Alexandria Police Department Headquarters (3600 Wheeler Avenue). The ceremony, remembering the victims, survivors, first responders and others impacted by 9/11, will include a presentation of colors, remarks by Mayor Alyia Gaskins and public safety officials and a return to quarters ceremony.
In the event of inclement weather, the event will be held inside APD Headquarters.
Alexandria’s first responders were among those that were on scene of the Pentagon in the aftermath of the Sept. 11 attack. Sixteen Alexandria residents also died in the 9/11 attacks.
Nearly 3,000 people were killed in the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. There will be 9/11 ceremonies streamed live at the Pentagon, the National September 11 Memorial & Museum in New York and Flight 93 National Memorial near Shanksville, Pa., along with local events around the nation.
In neighboring Arlington, there is an effort underway to bring a 9/11 education center to the Pentagon, and the National Park Service has designated the 9/11 Pentagon Memorial as an affiliated area of the National Park System.
