Alexandria’s continued unemployment claims continued a monthlong streak of increases going into February, as the number of initial claims continues to decline.
There have been increases in continued claims for a month in Alexandria. The Virginia Employment Commission reports that there were 1,442 continued claims for the week ending Feb. 6, a 5% increase from the previous week’s total of 1,367 claims.
Initial (first time) claims fell to 316 for the week ending Feb. 6, a 34% decrease from the previous week’s total of 479 claims. Initial claims peaked this year at 836 for the week ending Jan. 9.
The week ending Feb. 6 is the 47th week since the coronavirus pandemic began in Virginia.
Statewide, continued claims fell 3% to 65,091, and initial claims dropped 22% to 14,203.
“This is the fourth consecutive week of decreasing initial claims, the first time that this has happened since May and June 2020,” noted VEC.
According to VEC:
The locality with the most initial unemployment claims this week was Virginia Beach City which saw 721 initial filings. Norfolk City and Fairfax County followed with 671 and 620 initial claims respectively. Of the 133 counties and independent cities in the Commonwealth, 113 localities saw either a decrease or no change in the number of filings this week compared to the week before. The locality with the largest decrease was Richmond City which had 272 fewer initial claims compared to the previous week.

Following a gap year of competing, then virtual rehearsals during the pandemic, followed by the well-earned retirement of our long-term director, a year of a director search, Potomac Harmony hit the regional contest stage in Concord, North Carolina in March for the first time since 2018! It was exhilarating, reaffirming, and rewarding!
The chorus hit all of its goals, the biggest of which was to have fun and sing our best on contest stage — we did both! Because we earned a score over 400 points, our new Director, Allison Lynskey, was awarded the Novice Director award, photo above.
