With just hours left until polls close, participation in the Democratic primary for Virginia’s 8th Congressional district is far outpacing turnout in the Republican primary for U.S. Senate.
As of 4 p.m., 10,772 ballots were cast citywide in the five-candidate Democratic primary, about 10.7% of the city’s 99,811 registered voters, according to figures released by the city’s general registrar. The numbers include 6,346 early and mail-in ballots, leaving the total number of in-person votes cast at just 4,426.
Polls are open until 7 p.m.
Noon Democratic primary numbers
In the Congressional primary, incumbent Rep. Don Beyer (D-8) faces former Alexandria City Council Member Mo Seifeldein, fired State Department worker Michael Duffin, veteran and former CIA officer Adam Dunigan and military family advocate Lorena Bruner. The winner will face Republican Tony Sabio in the Nov. 3 general election.
In the Democratic primary, the top performing precincts in the city are:
- Mount Vernon Recreation Center (2701 Commonwealth Avenue) with 643 total votes
- George Washington Middle School (1005 Mount Vernon Avenue) with 544 total votes
- Cameron Station Community Center (200 Cameron Station Boulevard) with 544 total votes
The lowest performing precinct in the city is the Del Pepper Center, with 108 voters casting early ballots, and, as of 4 p.m., 39 voters casting in-person ballots.
Noon Republican Primary numbers
As of noon, just 898 ballots were cast in Alexandria in the Republican primary for U.S. Senate. That includes 590 early or mail-in votes cast.
The Republican primary for U.S. Senate will determine a nominee to face Sen. Mark Warner (D-Va.) this fall. Warner is running for a fifth term as Virginia’s senior senator, and the Republicans vying to face him are retired Army Maj. Gen. Bert Mizusawa, former federal employee and tech executive Kim Farington and veteran and former CIA officer David Williams.
The top performing precincts in the city are:
- Old Town North (901 Wythe Street) with 67 total voters
- George Washington Middle School (1005 Mount Vernon Avenue) with 64 total votes
- North Quaker (1801 N. Quaker Street) with 64 total votes
The lowest performing precinct in the city is the Del Pepper Center (4850 Mark Center Drive), with six voters casting early ballots, and, as of noon, 10 voters casting in-person ballots.
