The City of Alexandria and other agencies serving the city have announced closures and other schedule changes for the Juneteenth holiday.
All City of Alexandria government offices will be closed Juneteenth (Friday, June 19). The holiday recognizes the end of slavery in the U.S. as the last enslaved people in Galveston, Texas, learned they were free on June 19, 1865 — two years after President Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation.
Alexandria will have several Juneteenth events on Friday, including Memorial at Douglass Cemetery (1421 Wilkes Street) from 10-11:15 a.m., the Washington Revels Jubilee Voices Juneteenth Concert at Shiloh Baptist Church (1401 Jamieson Avenue) from 1-3 p.m., and Juneteenth Festival at Charles Houston Recreation Center (901 Wythe Street) at 3 p.m.
Other closures include Alexandria City Public Schools, Alexandria General District Court, Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court, Court Service Unit, Circuit Court, the Clerk of Circuit Court, the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria, Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles, Alexandria Library, the Alexandria Health Department, Flora Krause Casey Health Center and the Teen Wellness Center clinics.
While the AWLA will be closed, animal emergencies or wildlife concerns can still be reported to the police non-emergency line at 703-746-4444.
Charles Houston and Patrick Henry Recreation Centers will be open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., and Charles Houston Recreation Center will host a Juneteenth event from 4-8 p.m. All other city recreation facilities and nature centers will be closed, while the Torpedo Factory Art Center is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Free DASH Bus service will operate with regular service, including the King Street Trolley from King Street Metro to City Hall/Market Square every 15 minutes, from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. daily.
There are no changes to city trash and recycling pickups on June 19, but the Household Hazardous Waste Electronic Collection Drop-off Center is closed on Fridays.
