Little Shop of Horrors is playing at the Lee Center in Alexandria, VA from May 14 through
May 16. The spectacular 140-minutes family-friendly musical features a well-rehearsed and talented group of 46 Alexandria youth. The cast are active participants in the city’s Out-of-School time programming at the recreation centers and are also participants in Momentum Collective’s free after-school arts programs.
“They may offer you fortune and fame, love, and money, and instant acclaim, but whatever they offer you don’t feed the plants”. One of the most memorable musicals of the 80’s, Little Shop of Horrors features a mix of dark comedy, rock-and-roll, and Motown-era music, exploring themes of greed and sacrifice. The musical follows nerdy florist Seymour Krelborn, who finds fame and fortune after discovering a mysterious, alien plant he names “Audrey II”. The R&B-singing, man-eating plant is very demanding, forcing Seymour to do his bidding.
Directed by Alexandria Living Legend, Jason Ellis, audiences will be treated to one of the best interpretations of this musical,
regardless of the cast’s age. This jam-packed musical features 15 choreographed numbers to catchy tunes such as “Skid Row”, “Ya Never Know”, “Some Fun Now”, and “Mean Green Mother from Outer Space”. The musical has been tailored for all audiences and age groups and is made possible through partnership with the City of Alexandria Recreation Parks and Cultural Activities.
