Anti-Fascist Protest Planned at Holiday Inn This Afternoon

When the Proud Boys and other protestors come to D.C. this week, they might find Alexandrians counter-protesting them in D.C. and at hotels in Virginia.

A protest group called Shut Down DC is planning a rally outside of Holiday Inn (2460 Eisenhower Avenue) in Alexandria, where some of the right-wing protestors coming to D.C. are allegedly staying.

The counter-protest, called “No Rooms for Fascists”, is planned for 3 p.m. today (Monday). Attendees are asked to wear a mask and while a flyer for the protest said to wear black, event organizers said in an email that’s no longer expected.

“Holiday Inn Alexandria is hosting violent white supremacists and Neo-Nazis on the week of Jan. 6,” the flyer said. “We reject Holiday Inn’s support of violent fascists who intent to harm our community. Join us to expose Holiday Inn’s preference for white supremacists.”

Grassroots Alexandria expressed a message of support for the protest and encouraged those who don’t feel safe marching to write to local media and their political leadership. Grassroots Alexandria also led protests outside of acting Department of Homeland Security Secretary Chad Wolf’s home this summer.

Jonathan Krall, executive director of Grassroots Alexandria, said in an email that the organization is calling on Holiday Inn to cancel the reservations for right-wing organizers scheduled this week.

Potomac Harmony is Back! Following a gap year of competing, then virtual rehearsals during the pandemic, followed by the well-earned retirement of our long-term director, a year of a director search, Potomac Harmony hit the regional contest stage in Concord, North Carolina in March for the first time since 2018! It was exhilarating, reaffirming, and rewarding!

The chorus hit all of its goals, the biggest of which was to have fun and sing our best on contest stage — we did both! Because we earned a score over 400 points, our new Director, Allison Lynskey, was awarded the Novice Director award, photo above. Additionally, one of our charter members, Jackie Bottash, was nominated for and honored with the Leadership Excellence award. It was a celebratory weekend!

What’s next? So much! We now look forward to upcoming performances, growing our membership, and expanding our musical product with new arrangements and an education component each week. It’s an exciting time to be part of this ever-growing ensemble!
